This study sought to identify the types of community health services programs that were being used by elderly persons in rural areas, and to identify barriers to the use of these programs. Three studies were reviewed that examined the use of community health services by elderly persons. This group of studies provided information relevant to the type of services used by elderly persons, factors that may constitute barriers to the use of such services, and appropriate methodologies for the assessment of community health services use patterns.
The Use of Community Health Services by Elderly Persons
Jackson (1990, pp. 167175) examined the use of community health support services by elderly patients subsequent to their discharge from the general medical wards and from the geriatric care wards of acute care hospitals. The objective of this study was to identify differences in the usage of community health support services between elderly patients discharged from general medical wards from those discharged from geriatric care wards. This study was not structured to test an hypothesis. Rather, it was structured to answer a research question. The locus of this study was in an urban area.
A twogroup cluster sample was selected from among (1) elderly patients released from general medical wards of an acute care hospital, and (2) the geriatric care ward of an acute care hospital. The research sample included 50 individuals selected for each cluster. Survey questionnaires were completed for the
individuals included in the research sample to develop information on the use by the sample members of community health support services subsequent to their release from hospital. Analysis of variance procedures were used to statistically compare the community health support services usage behavior of the two groups of the research sample.
