Dysthymia is a “Neurotic/Chronic Depression” that can impact many individuals. Dysthymia is a chronic, low level depression that lasts for a longer duration with symptoms that aren’t as severe. Once a year, about 105 million people, 1. 5% of the total population is affected by Dysthymia, also known as neurotic depression and is more commonly found in women, 1. 8% than men, 1. 3% (Leatherdale, 2013, p. 13). The discovery of Dysthymia was found by Dr. Robert Spitzer. He found that individuals that suffer from Dysthymia have a higher risk of having a disability.
Depression itself was never accepted; at least it took time to actually accept the fact that someone can be depressed and not just sad for a short amount of time. Not only Dysthymia but most depression is often overlooked due to the lack of resources, support, and finances that is not given nor provided for people who suffer from this illness. Due to the fact that mental illnesses aren’t treated like any other illness in society, it is not taken as seriously. Therefore, many people go without informing someone of it and strip away the option of even making an appointment to see if they are diagnosed with Dysthymia.
This paper will discuss the history and treatment of Dysthymia. In America, suicide is found to be the most common ninth reason of death with lives of thirty thousand people being lost every year. Inside the United States, someone commits every 17. 3 minutes. “The attempt of becoming suicide with depression ranges from 15-30%. For almost every attempt, one person successfully accomplishes committing. ” (Leatherdale, 2013, p. 20) Every person who experiences a form of depression has suicidal thoughts. This paper will discuss the history and treatment of Dysthymia.
Review of Literature Mental Illness especially ones such as Bipolar disorder, Autism, or any form of depression are often not taken as a serious problem. When help isn’t being received or no one shows any concern or interest in the person suffering, the individual allow their disease to go unnoticed, worsening their condition. People suffering from these disorders also give up when seeking help because they begin to think that no one cares. Limited resources also play a huge factor when dealing with Dysthymia.
Since the 1970s upon today, symptoms someone have are now being classified in groups and have specific signs to indicate what terminology is used and the categories they fall under. Dr. Robert Spitzer was the first to find a term similar to depression, but that affects a persons’ personalities, “Dysthymia”. Having Dysthymia cannot be prevented, but can prevent the symptoms from worsening if they have an outlet and with the right support. As the years progress more and more illnesses are being found and people are now being properly cared for by clinicians and counselors.
Having easier access to the right depressants, stimulants, and medication and therapy needed can become a huge advantage as well. I believe that conversations held within friends and family would play a critical role in anyone’s life dealing with Dysthymia. Referring people to a medical profession, and discussing mental health issues more would not only benefit the individuals, but their lives and others surrounding them who are supportive as well. Chapter Three: Treatment Due to Dysthymia being a mental illness, there are many medications and psychotherapies available for people which can greatly benefit from them tremendously.
Almost 80% of patients that used antidepressants symptoms were minimized. (Leatherdale, 2013, p. 58)Psychotherapies help the therapist grasp a better understanding of their illness. Therapists sometimes allow more than the patient in the room which includes the family or partner as well so that they can also greatly benefit from understanding the process and how to help them in a positive manner. Medication along with psychotherapy has been proven to be more effective. Psychotherapies do not have any side effects. Clinicians are empathetic and have practice in this area, and after the treatment ends, the benefits remain.
Physiotherapies last up to eight to twelve weeks helping the patient focus on their present and future. According to Lang and Thase (1966), they’ve concluded that visiting therapy for cognitive behavior and interpersonal psychotherapy helps with 75% of patients’ low-level chronic depression. One in five people get assistance due to their attitude on it not being as effective. Psychoanalysis therapies are weekly and monthly sessions with an individual. Sigmund Freud was the first to introduce this treatment with others in the same field as him.
Later on, improvements by other psychotherapists were developed. Sigmund was the founding father of the psychodynamic approach. The psychodynamic approach treated mental illnesses and created an explanation for human behavior. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. Psychotherapy looks at the past history of the Dysthymia and look for better alternatives or strategies to approach it and help those that are affected. Karen Horney, Harry Stack Sullivan, and Eric Fromm created Interpersonal therapy. They believed interpersonal therapy would help develop personal skills.
It also helps patients focus on challenges and troubles they’re currently dealing with. This form of therapy helps with finding helpful solutions and strategies to overcome them. This form of therapy helps with building deeper connections with others, gaining more confidence within themselves and how important it is to have self-belief. Cognitive therapy. The cognitive approach is an approach to psychology emphasizing the mental processes. Cognitive approach is how we direct our attention, perceive and remember information, and the way we think in order to solve problems.
Dr. Aeron Beck and his daughter, Dr. Judith Beck, are the founders of cognitive therapy. People who often have negative thoughts have a greater chance of experiencing symptoms of depression. Psychotherapists in this therapy focus on the patients’ negative thoughts in their sessions and their cause of them.
Behavior therapy focuses on revealing a patients’ response redirecting them in a more positive light. After the symptoms have been evaluated the patient is asked to change their routine to create progress in their lives.
Behavior Therapy is used to describe the types of behavior for mental disorders. It identifies self-destructive or unhealthy behaviors allowing them to cope in a more constructive and effective manner. Electroshock Therapy. Electroshock Therapy is a treatment of Dysthymia. It cooperates very well due to the neurotransmitters that are let loose inside of the brain. This therapy is more beneficial because the treatment works much faster. Although Electroshock Therapy works within the same time period of a regular session, high risk, low effectiveness, and long-term treatment may cause a patient to commit.
Chapter Four: Summary and Discussion When depression is shown for a long period, the person may be experiencing Dysthymia. Although Dysthymia has no cure, it can be prevented from getting worse with the help of medication and the right support. This illness is not something that should be taken lightly. It can be a matter of life or death. It affects many lives, not only of the person that’s going through it, but their families and friends lives as well. This level of depression can be genetic or can randomly come to people. If you often feel a sense of sadness you may have Dysthymia.
Not being as productive and becoming anti-social can also mean that an individual is suffering from this mental illness. Answering yes to two or three of the questions may show that the person is experiencing mild depression. If yes was their answer to at least three of the following, then they may suffer from dysthymia. When an individual responded yes to more than five of these questions for a minimum of two weeks, they may have major depression. Doctors, support groups, therapists, and medication can all help with Dysthymia.
When people become more open with their illness, others often become more comfortable with talking about their experiences. If you are experiencing one or more symptoms, you should not self-diagnose, but have someone in the field to diagnose you. Receiving help sooner than later can also prevent your diagnosis from worsening. I strongly advise anyone for anyone that may know someone or if it affects them as an individual are experiencing or feel that they may have this disease, to immediately seek medical and professional treatment.
